New Wild Cat Species Discovered in Bolivia After More Than a Century

Scientists have confirmed a new wild cat species in Bolivia’s mountainous Yungas region near La Paz. Named the Tilcayo tiger cat, or Leopardus tilcayo, it is the first new feline species formally identified since 1923. The small, spotted cat is slightly smaller than a domestic cat and was initially mistaken for one by local residents. Researchers have so far identified only two animals, a male and a female, and used whole-genome sequencing to confirm that they are a distinct species. The male is being cared for at a shelter after being handed over by a family, while the female was rescued and later released into the wild. Scientists say the species is vulnerable to extinction, as it has only been recorded in Bolivia and very few individuals have been found.
