NiDCOM Defends Its Position on Nigerian Detained in India
The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission has defended its account of the detention of Ekene Vitus Chukwuma in India. The agency said he was arrested in December 2025 over an alleged visa overstay after his Nigerian passport expired in 2020. NiDCOM said Chukwuma had remained in India for business despite having no valid travel documents. It added that he had previously received an Emergency Travel Certificate during an amnesty period but did not use it before it expired. Chukwuma reportedly disputes parts of the agency's account, including when he received his travel document while held at a deportation camp in Delhi. NiDCOM said Indian immigration authorities must clear detainees before deportation, while the Nigerian High Commission will issue fresh travel certificates when requested. The commission said it is seeking another amnesty period for Nigerians living illegally in India and urged citizens abroad to comply with immigration rules.
