Lagos Demolishes 1,544 Illegal Drainage Structures, Arrests 10,575 Environmental Offenders
The Lagos State Government has stepped up its enforcement drive to clear blocked drains and curb environmental offences. Over 1,544 structures built on drainage alignments were removed after identifying 2,218 contraventions across the state. Authorities also arrested 10,575 people for violations ranging from illegal reclamation and wetland encroachment to open defecation and highway crossings. Nine facilities involved in wetland encroachment were sealed for failing to comply with statutory notices. In addition, the Kick Against Indiscipline unit served 192 environmental abatement notices and carried out dredging and cleaning of more than 250 kilometres of primary and secondary drainage channels. New air quality sensors and improved fish kilns have been installed to monitor pollution and reduce smoke emissions. The state is determined to maintain a flood-free, sustainable environment through ongoing monitoring, dredging, and strict compliance enforcement.
