Jonathan Calls for Stronger Parties and Courts to Protect African Democracy

Former President Goodluck Jonathan says African democracy must be built on more than periodic elections. He called for stronger political parties, independent courts and institutions that uphold the rule of law. Speaking at the 2026 Goodluck Jonathan Foundation Democracy Dialogue in Bauchi, Jonathan said parties must practise internal democracy, promote accountability and offer credible leadership. He added that judges, civil society, citizens and political leaders all have a shared duty to protect democratic values and citizens’ rights between election cycles.
