FG Orders MDAs to Stop Funding Foreign Trips Without SGF Approval

The Federal Government has directed ministries, departments and agencies to stop processing expenses for official foreign trips unless approval has first been obtained from the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation. The directive, contained in an August 13, 2026 circular, followed reports that some government appointees were travelling abroad on official duties without the required clearance. The government said the breaches weaken accountability, coordination and responsible use of public funds. Under the new rule, accounting officers, permanent secretaries, agency heads and chief executives must provide proof of SGF approval before travel-related payments can be made. The Auditor-General will also demand the approval during audits. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs must require the approval before processing diplomatic support, Notes Verbales and official, diplomatic or service visa applications for government officials.
