Amnesty Calls for Release of Imran Wakili Over Posts Criticising APC Rally
Amnesty International has called on Nigerian authorities to release Imran Usman Wakili, a social media user detained over posts alleging poor attendance at the APC’s presidential campaign flag-off in Kaduna State. The group also said he was targeted for supporting former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, who it said had been detained for more than 260 days at the time of its statement. Amnesty said security operatives went to Wakili’s home in Karu, near Abuja, on October 29. When they did not find him there, they arrested his younger brother and the estate manager, according to the group. The organisation said Wakili had been denied access to his family and lawyer and warned he could face ill-treatment. It described his detention as unlawful, arguing that critical posts about matters of public interest do not justify arbitrary detention.
