Putin’s Party Claims Duma Supermajority After Opposition Exclusions

Russia’s ruling United Russia party has claimed 355 of the 450 seats in the State Duma, according to preliminary results announced by the country’s electoral commission. The result would give President Vladimir Putin’s party an even larger parliamentary supermajority. The vote was held under tight Kremlin control, with anti-war candidates reportedly jailed, forced abroad or excluded from the ballot. Critics also questioned the use of electronic voting and said some election observers were denied access to polling stations. The election has renewed fears of further military mobilisation as Russia’s war against Ukraine continues. I find it troubling that opposition figures were excluded, independent international observers were not invited and soldiers were reportedly present at some polling locations. Can Nigerian elections now be considered more credible than Russia’s elections?
