Onaiyekan Urges Nigerians to Demand Accountability From Elected Leaders

Cardinal John Onaiyekan has urged Nigerians to reject silence and demand accountability from elected officials at every level of government. Speaking at an event in Abuja, he said public office holders are elected to serve citizens, not to become their “lord and master.” The Catholic cleric said citizens must be willing to question policies that do not serve the public good. He added that bishops have a responsibility to speak against government actions they consider harmful to Nigerians. Bishop Godfrey Onah also said the Church’s role goes beyond criticising government. He urged Nigerians to pay attention to messages about personal moral change, arguing that better citizens are essential to better leadership and governance.
