INEC Says Suspects Arrested Over Alleged Plot to Target 2027 Election Workers
INEC Chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan says intelligence-led operations with the Department of State Services led to the arrest and arraignment of suspects over an alleged plot to threaten, intimidate or abduct ad hoc election workers. He spoke in Lokoja during a North Central operational readiness assessment and staff engagement. Amupitan warned that anyone who interferes with or harms election workers will face prosecution. He also urged electoral officers to avoid negligence and political bias, saying their neutrality is vital to public trust in the 2027 elections. INEC is coordinating with security agencies through the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security to address emerging threats. The commission expects to serve more than 103 million registered voters across 176,846 polling units.
