Obi, Kwankwaso Differ on Fuel Subsidy, State Police as NDC Faces Campaign Rift
Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the Nigeria Democratic Congress presidential ticket for 2027, have expressed different positions on fuel subsidy removal and state police. Obi supports ending the fuel subsidy through a phased and well-managed process, with savings directed to clear public benefits. Kwankwaso has argued for restoring subsidy in a modified form, including expanding local refining capacity to make fuel more affordable. They also differ on state police. Obi supports it as part of efforts to improve security, though he criticised the process leading to the State Police Bill. Kwankwaso remains opposed, arguing that the focus should be on fixing the existing federal police system. Meanwhile, the NDC has disowned a 59-member campaign council announced by the Obi-Kwankwaso Movement. Party leaders insist that support groups must work through official party structures, while the movement says it remains an independent organisation.
