Onanuga Cites Debt, Gas Investments in Defence of Tinubu’s Economic Record
Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga has defended President Bola Tinubu’s economic record, citing Nigeria’s public-debt level and investments in gas infrastructure. He said Nigeria’s debt burden is about 35 per cent of GDP, referencing the IMF’s April 2026 Fiscal Monitor, which puts gross public debt at about 35.5 per cent of GDP for the year. Onanuga also pointed to investments linked to the Midstream and Downstream Gas Infrastructure Fund. Reports indicate that about ₦1.6 trillion has been attracted across 31 projects involving more than 200 infrastructure assets, including compressed natural gas facilities. His comments came with criticism of opposition figures Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, as political exchanges intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections.
