Durban Secures R980 Million for New Waterfront Amusement Park
South Africa’s eThekwini Municipality has secured R980 million in funding for a new amusement park on Durban’s beachfront. The project will replace the former Durban Funworld site, which closed in 2023 after 75 years of operation. Design work has been completed, while technical and statutory planning is expected to continue until the first quarter of 2027. Construction will begin afterwards. The year-round park is expected to feature roller coasters, other rides, a virtual-reality zone, retail outlets and an upgraded amphitheatre. The municipality projects about 1,400 jobs across construction and operations, while local small businesses are expected to join its supply chain.
