Dangote Refinery Drives Sevenfold Rise in Nigeria’s Petroleum Product Shipments

Nigeria’s seaborne petroleum product shipments rose from an average of 79,000 barrels per day in 2023 to 561,000 barrels per day in the second quarter of 2026, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. The agency linked the increase largely to the start of operations at the Dangote Petroleum Refinery in January 2024. The report said exports averaged about 350,000 barrels per day during the quarter, while domestic shipments climbed to 211,000 barrels per day. It added that Nigeria’s seaborne imports fell from nearly 400,000 barrels per day in 2023 to below 130,000 barrels per day, reflecting greater local refining capacity. However, NMDPRA data showed that Dangote’s petrol supply to the domestic market fell to 25.8 million litres per day in July, down 21% from June. The refinery reportedly exported 3.4 million litres of petrol daily, while petrol imports increased to 19.7 million litres per day. The refinery’s capacity was expanded to about 700,000 barrels per day in February 2026, and it plans to add a further 700,000 barrels per day of refining capacity by the end of 2028.
