AI Can Speed Up Coding, But Strong Engineering Still Matters
Google’s 2025 DORA research describes AI as an amplifier in software development. It can strengthen capable engineering teams, but it can also magnify weak processes. Based on responses from nearly 5,000 technology professionals, the research links AI adoption to higher delivery throughput and product performance, while stability remains a concern. AI can help developers write code, test ideas and automate repetitive work more quickly. However, the time saved can shift to reviewing, testing, correcting and validating AI-generated output. As code changes increase, strong version control, small batches and fast feedback loops become even more important. AI also makes it easier to work in unfamiliar areas, but developers still need the judgment to assess whether an answer is secure, maintainable and suitable for production. The real leadership question is not just how much faster AI can make developers, but whether the engineering system can turn that speed into reliable value. AI may make the first version of software faster to build. It does not remove the need for careful engineering, security checks, maintenance and accountability.
