Enugu Water Supply: Residents Still Rely on Tankers Nearly Three Years After Mbah’s 180-Day Pledge
Nearly three years after Governor Peter Mbah pledged to restore pipe-borne water to Enugu within 180 days, many residents reportedly still rely on tankers, private boreholes, sachet water and other commercial suppliers. The deadline expired in November 2023, while households without boreholes reportedly pay up to ₦35,000 for a 1,000-gallon tanker. Water-related capital provisions reviewed total about ₦86.03 billion between 2023 and 2026. However, reported releases or expenditure for 2023 through September 2025 were about ₦7.97 billion. The figures raise questions about whether budgeted funds were released and whether additional spending records should be made public. Residents need independently verifiable information on water produced at the Ninth Mile and Oji schemes, supplies entering the distribution network, losses from leakages, and the neighbourhoods receiving service. The government should also address complaints of customers being billed despite receiving little or no public water supply.
