Trump Seeks Mandatory Prison Terms for Medicare and Social Security Fraud
US President Donald Trump has urged Congress to impose mandatory prison sentences on people convicted of defrauding Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security. In a video message, Trump said probation should no longer be available for offenders and proposed longer jail terms for larger fraud cases. He also called for repeat offenders to receive double sentences. Trump further said state and local officials who knowingly fail to stop fraud despite having the power to act should be held personally liable for losses to taxpayers. The proposal follows a major US Justice Department crackdown in June, when hundreds of people were charged in alleged healthcare fraud and opioid-related schemes involving billions of dollars in false claims.
