Who Holds the EFCC Accountable When Complaints Arise?

The EFCC is mandated to investigate and prosecute economic and financial crimes. But an anti-corruption agency with powers over public officials, businesses and citizens must also be subject to credible scrutiny when allegations are made against its officers. The commission says its Department of Internal Affairs handles complaints against personnel. The National Assembly can also exercise oversight over government agencies, while the courts assess EFCC prosecutions under established legal procedures. An investigation, arrest or allegation is not the same as proof of guilt. The key issue is whether complaints of misconduct, abuse of power or procedural breaches are investigated independently and transparently. Nigerians should ask whether a formal petition was filed, who handled it, what evidence was examined and whether a court made any ruling. Strong anti-corruption institutions are necessary, but their authority must be matched by accountability. Fair scrutiny protects both citizens and officers wrongly accused of misconduct.
