Afghan Ex-Interpreter Dies in ICE Custody Within 24 Hours Amid Investigation Calls
An Afghan man who worked alongside US Army Special Forces died in a Texas hospital less than a day after being taken into ICE custody. Mohommad Nazeer Paktyawal, 41, was arrested on March 13 and transported to Parkland Hospital in Dallas after complaining of chest pains and shortness of breath. Medical staff noted a sudden swelling of his tongue on the morning of March 14. Despite multiple lifesaving efforts, he was pronounced dead at 9:10 am. ICE has not released a cause of death and says his passing is under active investigation. Advocacy group AfghanEvac and Paktyawal’s family are demanding a transparent probe, including oversight by the Department of Homeland Security Inspector General and Congress. Paktyawal leaves behind six children, the youngest just 18 months old.
