Decaying Walls: Inside Nigeria’s Neglected Police College Oji River
Police College Oji River in Enugu State was founded in 1972 to train constables for the Nigeria Police Force. Today, this key institution lies in ruin, with broken-down buildings, overgrown courts, and dirt roads that resemble village paths. During a recent passing-out parade for Anambra State recruits, visitors found derelict facilities everywhere—from a weed-choked tennis court to a deroofed squash hall. Trainees drill on uneven fields, and snakes slither through the tall grasses. Even the busy Mammy Market fails to meet basic standards. Police leaders and South-East governors have been urged to act. President Tinubu has appointed a committee to oversee rehabilitation, but urgent repairs are needed now. Restoring roads, buildings, and training grounds is vital to ensure Nigeria’s police officers receive the professional foundation they deserve.
