Nigeria Joins BRICS as Leaders Back Trade Reform, Local-Currency Payments
BRICS leaders have unanimously adopted the New Delhi Declaration 2026 at the bloc’s summit in India. The agreement covers conflict prevention, multilateral cooperation, trade, tariffs and international security. The leaders urged dialogue to resolve international disputes and called for protection of civilians and civilian infrastructure in conflict zones. They also warned against actions that could endanger nuclear safety. On trade, BRICS criticised unilateral tariffs and other barriers that it said put added pressure on developing economies. The bloc also backed wider use of local currencies for cross-border trade and plans to explore faster payment systems among member countries. Nigeria attended as a BRICS partner country. Vice President Kashim Shettima reaffirmed Nigeria’s support for the World Trade Organisation and is expected to present the country’s investment opportunities to leaders at the summit.
