Ogun Taxpayers Demand Answers Over Reported $800m Gateway Airport Cost
Gateway International Airport in Ilishan-Remo/Iperu has begun operations after receiving an Interim Aerodrome Operational Permit and being commissioned in April 2026. However, the reported cost of about $800 million, or more than ₦1 trillion, has raised serious questions about value for public money. The airport was initially conceived as a public-private partnership, with private investors expected to finance, build and operate it. Residents now deserve a clear account of how the funding model changed, how much public money was spent, which contractors received payments, and what work was delivered between 2017 and 2026. Supporters believe the airport could strengthen agro-cargo exports and benefit farmers, manufacturers and exporters. But its commercial performance remains unclear. Ogun State should publish verified data on flights, passenger traffic, cargo volumes and airline operations, while an independent audit should trace every naira spent on the project.
