Gombe Police Bust Armed Robbery and Cyber Fraud Ring, Arrest Eight

Gombe Police Bust Armed Robbery and Cyber Fraud Ring, Arrest Eight

Gombe State Police Command has arrested eight suspects linked to armed robbery and online fraud across the state. The operation followed a June 7 report of a break-in in Wuro Birji, Akko Local Government Area. Victims said armed men wielding cutlasses stole their mobile phones. The suspects then used the devices to access banking apps and carry out fraudulent transactions. Investigators recovered evidence showing N296,790 was stolen from a GTBank account and N205,205 taken via a quick loan. Technical analysis led to the arrest of Mustapha Kabiru, alias “Musty Bobo,” a 19-year-old ND II Computer Science student at Federal Polytechnic Kaltungo. His confession helped police identify seven others. Police link the group to over 13 similar cases in Wuro Birji, Riyal, Bomala and Jauro Jatau. Officers say investigations continue and urge the public to secure personal data and report suspicious activity immediately.

It's interesting that both online fraud and cutlass-wielding robberies happened simultaneously, suggesting groups are diversifying their criminal tactics.

I'm not convinced that arrests alone will stop these crimes. Without addressing root causes, more suspects will just take their place.

A simple move could be community watch squads paired with cyber awareness workshops to spot suspicious behavior early.
