Ejiofor Warns Politicians Against Arming Thugs Ahead of 2027 Elections
Human rights lawyer Ifeanyi Ejiofor has warned Nigerian politicians against recruiting and arming thugs ahead of the 2027 general elections. He said weapons and criminal networks created to intimidate opponents could later turn against their sponsors. According to him, political foot soldiers may abandon their patrons when crime becomes a more profitable path. Ejiofor cited the country’s insecurity, including insurgency, banditry, kidnapping and communal violence, as reasons to tackle illegal arms and political violence. He urged security agencies and electoral authorities to investigate credible threats promptly and prosecute anyone who finances or directs criminal groups. He stressed that elections and political offices are temporary, but violence tolerated for political gain can endanger communities for generations.
