Ex-AIG Warns State Police Could Fail If Filled with Thugs and Vigilantes

Ex-AIG Warns State Police Could Fail If Filled with Thugs and Vigilantes

On Channels Television’s Morning Brief, retired AIG Wilson Inalegwu cautioned that Nigeria’s proposed state police may collapse if its ranks are populated by political thugs, vigilante members or party loyalists. He said success hinges on a transparent recruitment process that upholds professionalism, competence and political neutrality. Reflecting on the Native Authority Police era, he recalled how partisan appointments from party supporters once undermined public confidence. Inalegwu defended the Nigeria Police Force, arguing its shortcomings result from underfunding, insufficient manpower and poor logistics rather than lack of competence. He urged stronger investment in infrastructure and officers’ welfare to improve effectiveness. He also warned that weak institutions could allow desperate politicians to exploit a state police for intimidation. Inalegwu stressed that robust governance and oversight are essential to ensure impartial law enforcement and boost security nationwide.

To avoid collapse, implement clear vetting criteria, independent oversight boards, and community feedback mechanisms during every recruitment phase.
