UK May Rethink Plan to Extend Permanent Residency Wait for Foreign Care Workers

UK Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood says the government may revise proposals that could make some foreign workers wait far longer for permanent residence. Under the proposals, care workers who arrived on health and care visas could face a 15-year route to indefinite leave to remain, rather than the current five-year pathway. The changes could also affect people who entered the UK from 2021 under the existing rules. The plan has drawn objections from Labour figures and trade unions, who argue that it would unfairly change the terms for workers already in Britain. Mahmood said consultations are still ongoing and that the government will seek a balance between fairness to legal migrants and British residents. The UK government is also planning expanded refugee sponsorship and resettlement routes, including schemes involving charities, communities and universities.
