Court Warns Against Delays in Trial of Four Men Accused of IPOB-Linked Terrorism and DSS Officer’s Killing
A Federal High Court in Abuja has cautioned defence lawyers against delaying the trial of four men accused of terrorism, kidnapping and the killing of a Department of State Services officer, Ekpeyong Asuquo Owoh. The prosecution alleges that the defendants were involved in Owoh’s abduction while he travelled from Port Harcourt to Awka. They are also accused of belonging to the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra and its Eastern Security Network wing, as well as possessing firearms. The defendants have pleaded not guilty. The court granted the prosecution permission to protect the identities of its witnesses because of the terrorism-related allegations. The first witness will be identified only as “AB”. After defence lawyers sought more time to study the case file and newly served video evidence, the judge granted a short adjournment but warned that the trial must proceed without unnecessary delays. The case was adjourned until October 28.
