Ondo Lawyers Demand Coastal Alignment for Lagos-Calabar Highway
Lawyers and stakeholders from Ilaje communities in Ondo State have asked the Federal Government to restore the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway to what they describe as its original coastal route through the state. Speaking at a press conference in Lagos, the group alleged that the current alignment bypasses several Ilaje communities and diverts inland towards Edo State. They said communities including Ugbonla, Ilowo, Ilepete, Awoye and Igho risk being excluded from the project. The group argued that a route from Ondo's coast to Escravos in Delta State would be shorter and cheaper than the proposed inland connection through Edo. They urged President Bola Tinubu and the Ministry of Works to review the alignment, while maintaining that Edo State can benefit from the project without sidelining Ondo's coastal communities. The Federal Government has previously said its preferred alignment is along the coast, but that engineering realities may require adjustments. The dispute has renewed questions over whether a highway that moves far inland can still be described as a coastal road.
