Fayemi: Atiku’s Fuel Subsidy Promise Is a 2027 Electoral Strategy

Former Ekiti State Governor Kayode Fayemi says Atiku Abubakar’s proposal to restore fuel subsidy is primarily an electoral strategy ahead of the 2027 election. Speaking on a television programme, Fayemi compared the proposal to the APC’s Muslim-Muslim ticket in 2023. He said both decisions were political calculations designed to appeal to particular voter concerns. Fayemi said he still supports subsidy removal but criticised how it was implemented. He noted that governors, the Federal Government and the World Bank had previously developed safety-net plans for vulnerable Nigerians. He argued that continued hardship, poverty and inequality have made the subsidy debate politically potent, as many Nigerians are focused on food, school fees, healthcare and daily survival.
