Makinde Denies Oriire Kidnap Allegation, Sets Up Judicial Inquiry

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has denied allegations that his administration was involved in the May 15, 2026 abduction of students and teachers in the Esiele and Yawata communities of Oriire Local Government Area. Makinde spoke while inaugurating a Judicial Commission of Inquiry in Ibadan. He said the panel would establish the facts of the kidnapping, identify security and institutional failures, and recommend measures to protect schools and nearby communities. The governor said the victims’ rescue brought relief, but that a transparent investigation was needed to provide closure, ensure accountability and prevent a recurrence. The commission, chaired by retired Court of Appeal Justice Mojeed Owoade, has four weeks to submit its findings, subject to an extension if required.
