Former NGF Chief Urges Governors to Learn From Abia and Enugu Electricity Reforms
Former Nigeria Governors’ Forum Director-General Earl Osaro Onaiwu has urged state governments to study electricity reforms in Abia and Enugu as they seek to improve power supply and support economic growth. He cited the Aba Integrated Power Project, the Abia State Electricity Regulatory Authority and mini-grid frameworks as steps that could strengthen industrial activity and restore power to underserved communities. He also noted that Enugu has created its own electricity law and regulator, while bringing in private participation for distribution, generation and solar mini-grids. Onaiwu said states should not copy either model blindly. Instead, governors should adapt embedded generation, renewable energy, distribution upgrades and public-private partnerships to their local needs under the Electricity Act 2023.
