Can Governors Really Deliver Their States in Presidential Elections?
A political analyst argues that governors can still shape the 2027 presidential election through party structures, mobilisation and local political machinery. He notes that President Tinubu has gained support from governors in states where he performed poorly in 2023. However, the 2023 election raises questions about how decisive governors truly are. APC governors failed to deliver several states for their party’s presidential candidate, including Lagos, Kano, Katsina, Kaduna, Plateau, Imo and Ebonyi. The argument is that voter dissatisfaction, economic hardship and regional aspirations may outweigh the influence of state governors. Can incumbency and party machinery determine 2027, or will voters again defy political structures?
