Nigeria Would Be Different If Yar’Adua Had Lived, Pat Utomi Says

Political economist Pat Utomi says Nigeria might have taken a different path if former President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua had not died in office in 2010. Utomi described Yar’Adua as a committed patriot who wanted to move the country forward. He recalled being invited to the Presidential Villa, where Yar’Adua tried to persuade him to join the cabinet. Utomi said he declined, arguing that he could offer better advice from outside the PDP-led government. Yar’Adua reportedly responded that people with capacity could make more impact from within. He later prepared a list of seven Nigerians he believed could help build the country, but said Yar’Adua fell ill and travelled abroad before receiving it.
