Nigeria’s Security Spending Tops ₦6.57tn as 3.68 Million Remain Displaced
Nigeria allocated ₦6.57 trillion to security and defence in its 2025 budget, yet 3,679,757 people were internally displaced across 16 states as of September 1, 2026. Borno has the largest displaced population at 1,715,869 people. Benue follows with 452,175, while Zamfara has 261,995. The crisis is concentrated in northern Nigeria, with the North-East accounting for about 64% of all displaced people. For families forced from their homes, security spending should mean safer communities and a realistic path back home. The figures raise urgent questions about how security funds are improving protection for communities hit by conflict and violence. The displacement figures are based on data from the UN refugee agency.
