Making ₦1 Million Is Different From Keeping It: A Business Lesson
As I build my business, I am learning that making money and keeping it are two different skills. A business can generate ₦1 million in profit, yet leave its owner cash-strapped after restocking, logistics, staff costs, debt, personal needs and new opportunities take their share. Growth can also consume cash. Reinvesting every naira into stock, equipment or expansion may increase turnover, but it can leave a business without working capital or an emergency reserve. Small withdrawals and unplanned expenses can quietly weaken the cash position over time. I am learning to separate profit from spending money. The business needs systems that track income, expenses, debt, personal withdrawals, reserves, reinvestment and available cash. The goal is not only to make more money, but to retain a meaningful portion, protect liquidity and build a business that can survive difficult periods.
