N70,000 Transport Award: Relief for Federal Workers, but What About Everyone Else?
I welcome any relief federal workers can get in this difficult economy. For workers spending heavily on transport, the N70,000 six-month award may ease some pressure. But it is only a temporary cushion, not a lasting solution. Transport costs rose because fuel prices rose, while the wider cost of living continues to climb. The same hardship affects state and local government workers, private-sector employees, traders, security guards, job seekers and many others without federal ID cards. If the government admits that transport has become unbearable, its response should not stop at selective palliatives. It should address the causes through affordable fuel, functioning refineries, accessible CNG transport and policies that protect workers’ incomes. The key question is what happens after six months. Hardship will not disappear simply because an award ends. Nigerians need sustainable economic solutions, not repeated short-term interventions that only manage the pain.
