Northern Senators Demand Independent Probe Into Deaths of 37 Detainees in Minna

The Northern Senators Forum has called for an independent investigation into the reported deaths of 37 suspected illegal miners in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps in Minna, Niger State. The forum said investigators should establish how the detainees were arrested, where they were held, whether the facility was fit for detention, and how officials responded to reported distress calls. It also called for independent autopsies, with families and independent pathologists represented. The senators urged the involvement of the National Human Rights Commission, the Nigerian Bar Association, civil society groups and forensic experts. They said anyone found responsible through negligence, unlawful detention or deliberate action should face prosecution. They also called for a nationwide review of detention facilities operated by security agencies, while commending the Federal and Niger State governments for ordering and supporting investigations.
