Senate Says State Police Bill Could Become Law Before Year-End
The Senate says it plans to complete legislation establishing state police before the end of the year after at least 24 state Houses of Assembly approved the required constitutional amendment. Ondo State became the latest legislature to pass the Sixth Alteration Bill, 2026, which would replace the existing Nigeria Police Force framework with Federal Police and State Police Services. The National Assembly had earlier passed the amendment and sent it to the 36 state assemblies for consideration. Senate spokesperson Yemi Adaramodu said lawmakers would act quickly once the executive formally submits the National Policing Bill and related amendment bills. He said stakeholders would still be given room to contribute, while supporters argue that state police could improve local intelligence gathering and responses to banditry, kidnappings and other security threats.
