IGP Disu Orders Police to Treat Jungle Justice as Murder
The Inspector-General of Police, Tunde Disu, has warned Nigerians against mob action, popularly known as jungle justice. He said anyone who assaults or kills a suspect outside the law could face murder charges. Disu said those who incite, organise, film, circulate footage of mob attacks or prevent police officers from intervening may also be prosecuted for offences including conspiracy. He directed Commissioners of Police in the 36 states and the FCT to treat mob killings as homicide cases and conduct thorough investigations using forensic and intelligence resources. The warning follows renewed concern over extrajudicial killings, including the reported death of a 25-year-old University of Jos graduate accused of stealing a phone. The police urged Nigerians to hand suspects over to law enforcement agencies instead of resorting to violence.
