Netanyahu Calls UK ‘Islamic Republic of Britain’ During Podcast Interview
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has drawn criticism after referring to the United Kingdom as the “Islamic Republic of Britain” during an Israeli podcast interview on 13 August 2026. He was criticising what he described as hostile British media coverage of Israel. Netanyahu contrasted today’s coverage with that of writer Randolph Churchill during the 1967 Six-Day War. Netanyahu also echoed a 2022 remark attributed to US Vice-President JD Vance about Britain becoming a nuclear-armed Islamic country. He linked the comment to Israel’s efforts to prevent Iran from becoming another nuclear-armed Islamic republic. Relations between the UK and Israel have been strained since the Labour Party returned to power in Britain in 2024.
