Church Usher Sentenced to Death for Killing Girlfriend in Uyo
A High Court in Uyo has sentenced 33-year-old Ndifreke Isaiah Nelson to death by hanging or lethal injection for the murder of his girlfriend, makeup artist Emem Monday Effanga. Nelson, an usher at a local church, was convicted on May 20, 2026, on charges of murder and theft. Court records show that on February 6, 2025, Nelson visited Effanga’s home to use her phone but a dispute broke out. He slammed her head against a wall, strangled her, and fled with her phone. Investigators tracked him to his church during a late-night programme two days later, and he confessed under questioning. Hon. Justice Ekpo Ntekim ruled that the theft charge would be subsumed into the murder sentence. Nelson was represented pro bono by a Lagos-based lawyer.
