Gunfire and Explosions Reported Near Niamey Airport Military Base
Heavy gunfire and explosions were reported early Saturday around Air Force Base 101 near Niamey’s international airport. Authorities had not issued an official statement, and the cause of the incident remained unclear. Residents said shooting began around 1:00 a.m. and continued until daybreak. Other witnesses reported sporadic gunfire in western Niamey, while videos showed armoured vehicles deployed near the airport and administrative district. The incident follows jihadist attacks on Niamey airport in January and June. Air Force Base 101 is a key military facility that also hosts personnel linked to Russia’s Africa Corps and the Alliance of Sahel States joint force.
