INEC Redeployments Raise Fresh Concerns Over Neutrality Ahead of 2027 Elections
Fresh controversy has followed INEC’s redeployment of senior officials ahead of the 2027 general elections. Oluyemi Titilayo Adeyemi-Showunmi was moved from the Lagos office to head Electoral Operations, a department responsible for key aspects of election planning, personnel deployment and polling logistics. Civil society leaders and opposition figures have questioned whether her reported family connection to a member of the Tinubu-Shettima campaign structure could affect public confidence in the commission. Concerns have also been raised over the nomination of Mustapha Aliu, described as a relative of Sokoto State Governor Ahmed Aliyu, as an INEC commissioner. Former INEC officials and election observers say competence must be matched by visible impartiality in sensitive electoral roles. They have called on INEC to clearly explain the criteria for the redeployments and provide assurances that its decisions are free from political influence. An INEC official said claims of ethnic or political bias were speculative, maintaining that appointments followed merit and seniority. The official added that the former Electoral Operations director was moved while approaching retirement.
