PeacePro Calls for 50% Voter Turnout in Nigeria’s 2027 Election
The Foundation for Peace Professionals has urged Nigerians to target at least 50% voter turnout in the 2027 general election. With 103.4 million registered voters, this would mean more than 51.7 million people casting ballots. The group warned that turnout far below this level could weaken public confidence in the legitimacy of election outcomes. It noted that presidential election participation fell from 53.7% in 2011 to 26.7% in 2023. PeacePro urged INEC, political parties, civil society groups, the media and candidates to tackle voter apathy. It identified insecurity, distrust in institutions, logistical difficulties and the belief that votes do not bring meaningful change as major barriers. The group also called for issue-based campaigns that give Nigerians clearer policy choices and greater reason to participate.
