Igbo Leaders’ Restructuring Proposal Draws Pushback From South-West and Northern Groups
The Igbo Leaders of Thought have rejected the communiqué from the Abuja restructuring conference, saying the position of the Igbo delegation was overlooked. The group proposed a 10-region structure for Nigeria, with regions controlling their resources and operating regional police forces. It also called for the 2027 general elections to be suspended temporarily until restructuring is concluded. Its proposal for an enlarged Igbo region beyond the five South-East states has drawn objections from South-West and northern leaders. Critics say parts of the plan are unrealistic and could trigger political instability.
