Edo Cleric, Aunt Held Over Alleged Sexual Abuse of Pregnant 16-Year-Old
Police in Edo State have detained a cleric, popularly called an Alfa, and the paternal aunt of a 16-year-old girl over allegations of sexual abuse that led to the girl’s pregnancy. The Edo Commissioner for Women Affairs said the girl was placed in her aunt’s care after her parents separated. The aunt allegedly took her to the cleric’s home for prayers and sent her there alone on errands. The girl was reportedly more than five months pregnant before the case was brought to the attention of authorities. The girl is receiving care in a government shelter while investigations continue. The ministry said it is also considering welfare options for the baby and plans to support the girl’s return to school after delivery. The case comes amid concerns over sexual violence against children in Edo State, where the ministry says it recorded more than 70 alleged incest-related defilement cases between January and July 2026.
