US Judge Blocks Trump Administration’s Immigrant Visa Ban on 75 Countries
A federal judge in New York has struck down the Trump administration’s policy halting immigrant visas for applicants from 75 countries, including Ghana, Egypt, Haiti, Somalia, Russia and Colombia. The State Department had argued that the measure would stop people likely to rely on public benefits from entering the United States. However, the judge ruled that visa officers were being directed to deny applications based mainly on nationality, even where applicants showed they could support themselves. The ruling restores visa consideration for affected applicants seeking permanent residence through family reunification or employment. Tourist and student visas were not covered by the policy. The administration may appeal, while both sides have been asked to propose next steps by September 11.
