Court Remands 55-Year-Old in Gboko Over Alleged Abuse of 11-Year-Old Foster Child

An Upper Area Court I in Gboko, Benue State, has remanded 55-year-old Joseph Hwande at the Gboko Correctional Centre. He faces charges of alleged sexual abuse of an 11-year-old girl placed in his care. Prosecutors told the court that the girl, a displaced Fulani child, was repeatedly intimidated to keep her silent. She fled his home on June 26 after enduring ongoing abuse and maltreatment. A local resident found her and handed her to a vigilante group in Akaajime, Gboko, before the case was transferred to the Police B Division for investigation. The court adjourned the matter until July 29, 2026. Barrister Innocent Tyotsugh appeared on a voluntary basis to represent the minor’s interests.
