SERAP Gives INEC Seven Days to Explain Alleged ₦126bn Electoral Funds Irregularities
SERAP has asked the Independent National Electoral Commission to account for ₦126.46 billion allegedly lost, diverted, mismanaged or left unexplained in funds meant for electoral operations. The organisation cited findings in the Auditor-General’s 2023 report, which raised concerns about payments for ballot boxes, electoral devices, sensitive materials, result sheets and other election-related services. According to SERAP, the report flagged more than ₦112 billion allegedly paid without competitive bidding or procurement approval, with no evidence that the items were supplied. It also cited questioned payments for vehicles, audit services and contracts allegedly split to bypass procurement rules. SERAP asked INEC to disclose the beneficiaries, contractors, procurement records and evidence of delivery within seven days. It also called for any officials, companies or consultants found responsible to be referred to the EFCC and ICPC for investigation and possible recovery of public funds.
