360 Abductees Freed in Major Military Operation in Borno’s Mandara Mountains

360 Abductees Freed in Major Military Operation in Borno’s Mandara Mountains — 1 of 3
1 / 3

Troops from Joint Task Force North East (Operation HADIN KAI) rescued 360 men, women and children from a fortified terrorist enclave in the Mandara Mountains of southern Borno State. The mission followed weeks of intelligence gathering, covert reconnaissance and careful planning. According to a statement by the JTF’s acting media officer, precision intelligence operations—including human sources, signals intercepts and drone surveillance—revealed the location and layout of the insurgent stronghold. Special Forces and sector troops launched a coordinated multi-axis assault under cover of darkness, achieving tactical surprise and overwhelming the terrorists before they could mount a defense. All hostages were secured, medically screened and evacuated to safe locations. Sadly, four infants died from exhaustion and harsh captivity conditions. The remaining rescued abductees are now receiving medical and humanitarian support. The military says follow-up clearance operations are ongoing to dismantle residual support networks and prevent future abductions. Meanwhile, a local youth alliance confirmed that community-led negotiations helped secure the release. They called on government authorities to carry out thorough screening of all returnees and to sustain support for affected families.
