FG Sets Up Panel, Suspends NSCDC Officers Over Deaths of 37 Detainees in Niger

The Federal Government has set up a 10-member independent committee to investigate the deaths of 37 people detained by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps in Niger State over alleged illegal mining. The committee will examine the arrests, detention conditions and circumstances surrounding the deaths. It will also identify those affected, establish possible negligence or misconduct, and recommend sanctions, compensation where appropriate, and safeguards against a recurrence. The Minister of Interior has suspended the Niger State Commandant and 20 other officers pending the outcome of the investigation. The panel has two weeks to submit its report, while the NSCDC has been directed to preserve all relevant records and evidence.
